Saying Goodbyes

I hate goodbyes. Hate them. I understand hate is a strong word but I think saying goodbyes deserves it.  I don’t do well with change and goodbyes typically lead to some kind of major change. We’ve known about this goodbye for 4 or 5 months but last weekend we finally had to face it as we said goodbye to Cory’s brother Caleb and his girlfriend, Anna. They packed up and headed out West for grad school.

We are very proud and excited for them but it does stink that they have moved 20 hours away. Caleb went to University of South Carolina for his bachelors’ degree, which is about 3 hours from us, but he came home some weekends and was home during school breaks. Only being 3 hours away makes it possible to do weekend trips but 20 hours?!?! I think it will really sink in when Cory realizes he can’t do that anymore. Once they get settled in, I know we will be taking a few trips to visit them in Texas but it’s not the same as getting to watch NFL almost every Sunday with them.
We had a few going away dinners over the course of the weekend. Saturday night we met up with Caleb, Alee {Cory’s sister} and his stepdad Tim for dinner at Wild Wings.

Sunday evening we had Caleb and Anna, Cory’s Granny Betty, and Alee over for cake and ice cream. Friday was Granny’s birthday so we did a birthday/going away party all in one. It was a fun evening and a good chance to get almost everyone together one last time before Caleb and Anna left.

Caleb always comes up with the most thoughtful, practical gifts. He noticed that Granny was keeping her candy in a peanut can so he bought her those candy jars.  Very observant, if I must say so myself.

No one is really sure when we will all be back together again so it was a good opportunity to snap a few family photos. The picture above is Caleb, Alee and Cory.

Brotherly love at its finest.

Anyone who is close to Cory or me knows that we had a house guest for most of the summer. I won’t go into all the details, but Cory’s mom stayed with us for a few months. She moved to Alabama the week before Caleb and Anna left.
Not that she wasn’t a pleasant guest, but I’m happy to have my home back to normal.  Our house is the perfect size for the two of us but when you add an extra adult into the mix, things got cramped. It wasn’t always easy having her here and took some readjusting in our daily routines.
Right before she moved in, we got my grandmother’s bedroom suite for our guest bedroom but I never had a chance to get my stuff set up with the new furniture. One evening last week I was finally able to set up the guest room with our new {to us} furniture and the comforter to match the room. I’m so excited to see the final product even if it has been 3 months.
Anyway, I digress.

Like I said before, I really don’t do well with change and last week was a LOT of change in a very short period.

The dogs seemed kind of lost the first couple days after the MIL left but they seem to be back to normal. It amazes me how changes to our routines affect them as well.

Say a little prayer that our family adjusts to living so far apart!
