Five on Friday,  Love Story

5 Ways to Protect Your Bling.

Happy Friday, y’all! I must say that this week has been significantly better than the last one although I’ve spent a good bit of time digging through old jewelry receipts, talking with the insurance adjuster and trying to find pictures of my wedding rings. In lieu of having my wedding rings stolen, I thought I would share 5 ways {that I wish I had known two weeks ago} to protect your bling!

Protect-Your-Bling

ONE » Keep all receipts. And keep them in a safe place. We have a filing cabinet with a folder labeled jewelry that we keep our paperwork and receipts for all the jewelry Cory has ever bought me. This was the only easy part of this whole ordeal…being OCD about paperwork came in handy for once, I guess.

TWO » Have those babies appraised. While we do have all our receipts, Cory didn’t purchase the three center diamonds for my ring. They were family heirlooms from his great-grandmother and it makes me sick just typing it. The closest thing we have to an appraisal was having a jeweler look at by engagement ring a few weeks ago when we went in to talk about upgrading my center stone. He shared with us that the cut of my diamonds were rare and hadn’t been cut that particular way since the 1930’s. Thankfully, he remembers the ring and has agreed to give us a guesstimate with some pictures of the ring.

THREE » Take pictures of your rings. I remember specifically telling MK {our wedding photographer} that I didn’t really care about the very traditional pictures and I guess a ring pictures fell into that category. I’ve never really missed the ring pictures until I had to browse through all 1000+ wedding pictures looking for a clear one of my rings for the jeweler and the insurance adjuster.

FOUR » Don’t be stupid. I was stupid, y’all. And maybe a little naive. Even though we had a safe in our room at the beach {I’m not sure how safe these actually are, though. Someone has to have the capability of resetting it, right?} and I had kept everything valuable in it all weekend. Cory had already shut it that morning {which is why I think nothing else went missing} and I noticed my jewelry was still on the vanity so I put it with the rest of my “cheap” jewelry down inside my suitcase. I clearly remember thinking “No one will go through my suitcase. They’ll be alright.” I hate that the world has become a place where you have to assume the worst in people, but it has and if your naive about it, you get your rings stolen.

And lastly but certainly most important…

FIVE » Insure your jewelry for Pete’s sake! Everyone and their brother told us that we needed to take out additional insurance for my jewelry but it was one of those things that we let slip through the cracks. Please, if you don’t have insurance on your precious wedding rings, learn from my mistakes and go call your agent right now!  I’m by no means an insurance agent but I’ve read a lot on insuring jewelry the past couple days and found that you should speak to your agent every two years to adjust the value of your policy covering jewelry.

Thankfully, a portion of my rings will be covered under our homeowners policy but the emotional loss of losing something so meaningful by itself is hard. Trust me when I say, you don’t want the added weight of not having the full value of your wedding rings {monetarily and sentimentally} covered.

It is my hope that maybe, just maybe, sharing these simple 5 ways to protect your bling will save someone else the heartbreak of losing their very special wedding rings. Now, go call your insurance agents!

Oh, girl, I am so sorry!! That has to be such an awful feeling! I have the receipts and diamond cards for my rings, pictures too, but no insurance. We were always thinking of getting insurance for my engagement ring but never have. I’m pretty rough on my rings, I never take them off for anything….but now with moving overseas I don’t know what to do yet. I’ve thought about maybe just leaving my engagement ring in a safety deposit box at the bank and only wearing my wedding ring abroad for safety reasons…but then another part of me feels like “Why have it if you don’t wear it…” I doubt there’s much in the way of international jewelry insurance unless you have especially expensive jewelry and enough money to invest in it…

Insurance was always on our to-do list and I really do wish we had taken care of that. Cory and I were talking about that this over the weekend and trying to decided what we would do if we were moving. I think as long as it’s not a danger to your safety, I would take mine. In all my research the past week, I did find one that offered international coverage but I don’t know how expensive it would be. Our homeowners covers world wide which is how we were able to get a portion covered at the hotel.

grrrreat post Paige! I still don’t shower with mine or wear in the sand, beach etc. Also, if you are out of cleaner- A tiny bit of baking soda mixed with water makes this baby SHINE!

Thanks, lovely! I was the same way! I didn’t even sleep in mine in fear it would get snagged on something which is how I know they weren’t “lost” as the hotel kept referring to it as. I’ll remember that tip when I get a new one!

I hate that you’ve had to go through this :( So many good points here and I think you’ll help a lot of people out! Thankfully we have insurance and my ring has been appraised but I had no idea it needs to be done every 2 years so that is something I’ll be doing from now on. Hope you get everything worked out quickly!!

Thank you. Hopefully, I saved someone from this headache! It made sense after I read it because the value of metals and diamonds fluctuate and you want to make sure your policy is enough to cover the value!

These are all great tips! Luckily, I have them all under control! Although I agree with you, even with having insurance or money to buy a new ring if need be, it’s still really hard to lose that sentimental value!
